POST GIG NOTES:
As per usual, I began with a few solo tunes on guitar and
then was joined by the veteran musical forces of Bob York
(piano), Gary O'Bray (drums) and Kenn Nakamine (bass) for a
set dedicated to the blues; originals and covers. My set
ended up being from 8PM to 9PM to the usual appreciative
Rossini clientele and staff. This was a special
entertaining evening because the amazing jazz vocalist
Patti V followed with a set, singing a few of her favorite
jazz standards, which included the ever popular
Route 66. Also
we were entertained by the lovely young vocalist
Simone McIntosh and
drummer Mario Avila. Both incredibly talented, Simone
has been accepted to study Opera Performance in
September at the UBC School of Music,
while Mario studies jazz and is a sophomore in
the Capilano College Music
Program.
We'll definitely be seeing more of them at Rossini's and
elsewhere.

Yes,...
another very enjoyable evening for me. Many thanks to the
following seasoned jazz musicians for their very welcome
acompaniment: Francis Fernandes (piano),
Peter Trill (upright bass) and Stephen Berne (drums).
They added a nice jazzy feel to my bluesy tunes. And
thanks to the Rossini's staff and clientele for their

Throughout the evening there were performances by some

up for a fun jam with them to conclude the evening. Many

Okay,...
this is looking like it's getting to be a regular thing.
I'm so glad !! It was another fun time of playing some of
my blues influenced tunes with help from Bob York (piano),
Stephen Berne (drums) and Clyde Griffith (conga). Thanks to
a very apppreciative crowd this ended up being a 75 minute
set. Thanks Arni, for having me back again, and thanks to
my manager Ken Wood for arranging this with him. Also, many
thanks to Bob, Stephen and Clyde for helping play my tunes
with me.

This
was my 2nd performance at this friendly venue owned
by Arni May,
thanks to Arni (of course) and my friend and manager Ken
Wood. My 40 minute set consisted of
Part-time Love Full-time Pain,
The Lonely Hearts Dance and
RL Burnside Blues. Then
the fabulous house pianist and drummer (Bob York and
Stephen Berne, respectively) graciously joined me to help
out with
Whistle in the Dark,
Girl From the North Country (Bob
Dylan),
Slip'n'Slide,
Corae Corae and
Got My Mojo Workin' (Preston
Foster). What an amazing time I had with the warm and
inviting crowd that was present. Many thanks to Bob and
Stephen for helping me out, as they did on September 9th.
My set was followed with another set by Bob and Stephen as
they featured individual lady vocalists who were in
attendance in the audience. These ladies were excellent !!
If I can obtain their names I would love to add them to
this write up. I was completely flattered when they
dedicated songs to me. That was
a humbling experience, indeed. Thanks
girls for entertaining our table of six with those class
act performances. I hope our paths cross again.

ROSSINI'S,

1525 Yew
St, Vancouver, BC
7:45PM to 8:15PM

Thanks
to my good friend (and acting manager) Ken Wood, I was
graciously invited by club owner (and awesome jazz
drummer) Arni May to
perform a short set at his location on 1525 Yew Street
in Vancouver. The amiable Arni and his lovely wife
feature live jazz music every night of the week, which
seems to be a rare thing in Vancouver these days for any
music genre. Kudos to Arni and his wife Anne for
maintaining such a grand tradition!!
Some of the acts are local and some international. I was
given the honor of performing following an instrumental set
by the talented duo, pianist Bob York and drummer Stephen
Berne.
My music certainly isn't jazz, but some of the blues
influenced music I play certainly has a somewhat distant
but conjugal and cordial relationship with the former. I
opened with 2 of my original guitar instrumentals
(Shenandoah
and
Max and the Squirrel),
before slipping into my blues ballad
I Don't Want to Lose Your Love,
followed by Preston Foster's
blues standard (that became the well known
Muddy Waters signature
tune),
Got My Mojo
Working. As
appreciative as audiences are to hear original music, I
find they also like to hear something thrown in the mix
that they're well acquainted with.
In
closing I performed my blues song
I Just Got the News to which
Bob York and Stephen Berne came back up, joining in to help
bring my set to a trio finale.
For the remainder of the evening the stage was graced with
a variety of fine, well seasoned jazz gentlemen and ladies;
both instrumentalists and vocalists. The evening was a
blast with interesting solos swirling at every musical
turn. I wish I could remember the names of all the players
but I haven't been involved much with the jazz circles over
the years, unfortunately. Although any local jazz
aficionado would no doubt know the faces and recognize the
names.
Rossini's,
besides being a great venue to enjoy some flavorful
jazz, also has a tantalizing, reasonably priced menu of
Italian cuisine. The place has charisma and charm and
it's wonderful to see and hear jazz musicians just walk
in the back door and sit in with the musicians that are
already playing. Even the talented owner Arni came up to
play a set on the drums. One of Arni's most memorable
and humbling experiences as a young man of 18 was
playing the drums in a band fronted by the 20 year
old Elvis Presley at
the beginning of his kingly reign. Arni proudly displays
a couple old framed photos of him and Elvis from that
period on the club wall.

DEZFEST 2009, Metchosin, BC, Vancouver Island - August 8th,
2009
Janice Wyatt
This was the 5th annual outdoor music festival on a
beautiful 40 acre property along the Pacific Ocean in
Metchosin, British Columbia sponsored by
drummer/carpenter Des Carpenter and
Shiatsu, reflexology practitioner and cookie maker
extraordinaire, Hayley Clarke. Once again the weather
co-operated for this fun filled event, which included a
Berkshire pig roast and live music provided by myself
and the fantastic melodic metal band Black Hat Villain.
BHV drummer Tim Sweeting joined me on stage for some of
my performance. Also my lovely wife Janice joined in on
mandolin with Tim and I for our acoustic power trio
rendition of Steve Earle's
COPPERHEAD
ROAD. For
my 2 sets I performed about 75% original material and
25% covers, which consisted of favorites by
Muddy Waters,
Cat Stevens,
Gordon Lightfoot,
Greg Lake,
Taj Mahal,
and Mark Knopfler. It
was on this occasion that I first performed my newly
written dedication blues tune to the late, great
R.L. Burnside,
entitled R.L.
BURNSIDE BLUES.
No one leaves this family event hungry, as there are ample
amounts of roast pig, potato salad, coleslaw, buns and
Hayley's irresistible chocolate chip cookies. The weather
was "iffy" early on in the day, so ample tarps were
suspended over the food areas and the smoking pit.
Fortunately they weren't actually needed until after the
music portion of the day and evening was over. This was the
first year the "endless beer keg" (which is generally
reserved for the musicians and volunteers) actually ran out
in the wee hours after the event. That's what happens with
musicians around. Usually there's a few cold glasses still
left for the next day's site tear down work crew. But not
this year.
Once again, many thanks to Des, Hayley and new son Charlie
for the personal invite to come and perform. I look forward
to DezFest 2010. The musical planning is already in the
works.

JACK LONSDALE'S
PUB,
North Vancouver BC - August
20th,1994
From
my time at SPIRALS I had the pleasure of meeting a number
of good local musicians and songwriters. One of which was
guitarist and local radio DJ Shawn Carle. Shawn
Carle,
Todd Butler and I
once performed a 1994 North Vancouver gig together at a
bar (I can't remember the name of) on Lonsdale, a number
of blocks north of where SPIRALS was located. Shawn
arranged this enjoyable event.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
SPIRALS,
North Vancouver BC - throughout 1993
In
1993 I used to perform regularly at a fun, funky, colorful
little club in North Vancouver near the foot of Lonsdale
called SPIRALS. It was owned by a man named Ian who
liked to support local artists. Artsy people hung out,
performed, exhibited their art on the walls and just
generally had a great time, supporting and inspiring each
other. Each of us musicians took our turns performing
on it’s very warm, vertically challenged stage,… above the
kitchen. I refer to this stage in a line of a song I
recently wrote (“…on a stage so small, I couldn’t stand up
tall…”). Although the original building still exists,
SPIRALS no longer does, but it lives on in the memories of
the many who regularly dropped in for a pint, a tune and a
visit.
As
a side note......it
was here where I met a pretty redhead waitress named Janice
Streng. We hung out together from time to time over
the following months that I performed there, but we never
seriously perused any ongoing relationship with each other
at the time. It was all very casual. After
Janice stopped working there, and I stopped playing there
we lost touch, only to accidentally(?) reunite in July
2006. Janice and I were married on August 4th,
2007.

THE ROGUE FOLK
CLUB,
Vancouver BC - June 1992
After my
move to the west coast of British Columbia I became
involved in more solo performing at bars and clubs. One
such included a short, single set performance at the
W.I.S.E. Hall in Vancouver BC for
Rogue Folk Club.
What a warm and appreciative crowd they were. Here's
excerpts from the ROGUE FOLK REVIEW, June 1992,
Vol. 6 No. 7:
“Jeff Wyatt was also making his debut at the hall and had
the guts to open with a tricky instrumental
entitled
Arizona Wedding March….Jeff’s
voice reminded of Murray McLauchlan’s, yet I could never
quite pinpoint why. Maybe it had something to do with
the way he slid down a crescendo to a bass swallow (African
or European Swallow? – ed. Sorry). Jeff had a
considerable professional stage presence,…His guitar riffs
were strong…”

REGINA GUILD OF FOLK
ARTS,
Regina SK - 1990
Once
again I had the pleasure of performing for this warm crowd
presenting an acoustic/electric warm up set for the
brilliant and velvety voiced Lynn Miles at
Regina's Copper Kettle
Restaurant.
She's a very funny lady as well with a very calm,
straight delivery of a punch line. That evening I had
performed a few tracks off my newly released
album
Flight of the Hawk with
musical assistance from my good buddy bassist Stan Dorsett
(who I had played with in the prairie rock band
EDEN) along
with a local tabla player whose name escapes me.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
REGINA GUILD OF FOLK
ARTS,
Regina SK - 1989
It was
both fun and exciting to perform an acoustic warm up set
for headliner, and Canada's acoustic guitar wizard from
Ontario, Don Ross.
I've heard a lot of acoustic guitarists live and on
record, and his skills and tasteful playing far exceed
that of anyone else I've heard. A few international
guitarists that I've heard and seen come close, but I
think Don still edges forth as the king among the varied
and amazing acoustic ax troops world-wide. His amazing
talent is well balanced with a warm, humble and funny
personality. He has since married Canadian talented east
coast performer and songwriter Brooke Miller, who
he works with musically as well as with the guitar
group Men of Steel. Don
still does his well received solo tours in his perpetual
globe trotting fashion.

MICHAEL'S
ON HAMILTON, Regina SK - 1989
This was
a quaint family owned restaurant and bar that I used to
perform at regularly on acoustic guitar. The bar had
a Cheers
type of
atmosphere where there was often something amusing
happening, just like on the TV series. Those were very
happy times for me and I used to look forward to going
there to perform and have a few late night brews with the
staff and clientele.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
THE
HOTEL
SASKATCHEWAN,
Regina, SK - 1989
I
remember playing there in their basement bar once or twice
on acoustic guitar. It was a loud but fun place to hang
out. The manager at the time was very generous with
providing beer for the musicians. The bar had regular solo
acts, duo acts and bands taking the stage on most nights
every week.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
NORTH
BATTLEFORD, Sk - in April 1989
Acoustic
guitar solo performing became a joy for me and I thus
performed extensively in and around Regina in clubs bars
and restaurants. One far reaching concert was to North
Battleford, Sask. in April 1989 to perform for a large
international gathering of the Sweet Adelines. At
that time I went by the stage name The
Traveling Troubadour. A
local newspaper called THE TELEGRAPH reviewed my
performance stating:
“Jeff Wyatt was The Traveling Troubadour Saturday and
enchanted the crowd…”

my first performance for this musically appreciative crowd
at Regina's Copper Kettle
Restaurant. It
was my treat to perform an acoustic warm up set for
Vancouver based headliner
Stephen Fearing. He
was a a masterful guitarist and songwriter even back
then. Since then he's been involved in solo as well as
group projects, one of the later being
Blackie and the Rodeo
Kings.
Stephen is a veteran Vancouver musician who travels the
world.

THE SANDMAN INN,
Regina SK - 1988
The
bar/restaurant management of the south side Regina landmark
was gracious enough to have me perform regularly at their
pool-side bar and restaurant. Someone once informed me that
there was a ballroom at this hotel that the talented
'prince of polyester', David Lindley and
his band once performed at some years prior. Since I've
moved to Vancouver area I've had the pleasure of seeing
this gifted and entertaining veteran musician perform on
2 occasions. Once solo at the Vancouver East Cultural
Centre, and
once with legendary Ry Cooder at
the historic Orpheum Theatre.

SASKATCHEWAN
IN THE 1970's - numerous performances with rock
band
EDEN
I
performed at literally hundreds of rock concerts and dances
in the 70's with my band-mates from
EDEN throughout
Saskatchewan and even slightly into Manitoba and Alberta.
On the page
EDEN - the band
on
this website I go into much more detail on our once
popular band.

SASKATCHEWAN
IN THE 1960's - numerous performances with a variety of
prairie rock bands
In the late 1960's, as a very young fellow in my early
teens, I performed with some early prairie rock bands,
which included
The Wildsmen,
The Unwritten Document,
and
The Sound of One Hand Clapping. I
couldn't begin to count how many dances and concerts I
performed at with these bands. The memberships of the first
two bands consisted of my childhood friends Vern Wild
(guitar & vocals), Curtis Wild (drums & vocals),
Jerry Baumgartner (bass & vocals), Preston McDade
(keyboards) and me (lead guitar & vocals). The
membership of
The Sound of One Hand Clapping were my
friends Brian Malloy (drums & vocals), Jerry
Baumgartner (bass & vocals), Greg Kurtz (bass
vocals), Ray Silzer (keyboards & vocals), Bernice
Braumberger (lead vocals) and me (lead guitar &
vocals). There may have been other members in there as
well, but I'm a little foggy on it after all this time.
